American Standard fill valve - how does it work?

Hi,

I replaced my bad fill valve with an American Standard version a couple of years ago. It has a black shaft with a big yellow body on top and a screw-on top. While I was replacing the flapper valve tonight, something happened to the fill valve and it got stuck open.

I opened it up, and it has some sort of gasket assembly that wasn't obvious how it worked. And now it's even worse, it's leaking from under the screw top as well.

Anybody know how these things work? And if I could even fix it?

Thanks for any help
ken

The Fluidmaster 400A is what American Standard is putting in their toilets now. About $6 at Home Centers. Easy to follow installation instructions and also has troubleshooting guide for any problem later. Good luck.

Somehow I thought that this would be everyone's reply. I fiddled around with it more afterwards, and it must need some kind of seal or seomthing, as noted above. I'll be headed to Lowes tonight.

Thanks everyone
