How to prevent rust in toilet tank

The bolts that hold the tank to the bowl were completely rusted (had to cut them with a hacksaw) I'm putting in new ones but want to know how to prevent this occurring in the future. I'm thinking of covering them with silicone caulk or Henry's roof cement. Any comments -- other ideas?

You could use the silicone but for the price of the caulk, you could probably get "real" (solid) brass closet bolts. Many are brass coated. Good luck.

In addition, there are two sizes. Go with the 1/4" solid brass. Brass doesn't rust like brass coated steel.
