Low Toliet Bowl Water

I noticed in the last week one of our toilets has the water line at least an inch lower than before. Maybe lower.

Why? Nothing has changed. House is 6 yrs old on a slab. No water stains under the vinyl, no sound of running water. It jsut stops before it fills to the water line.

There may be an issue with the fill valve not properly replenishing the water in the bowl for the next flush.

Or it may be a partially clogged trapway with toilet paper possibly "wicking" the water out of the trapway. I've seen this happen before.

So should we wait it out?

Or try plunging?

Does your water level fill to full and then drop, or does it just not fill up completely? If the latter, adjust the water valve float to compensate the water height in the tank.

It doesn't fill all the way.

But it WAS. Why would it change?

It's called, "anything man-made or mechanical can and will fail, eventually."

If it is the fill valve, plunging will not solve the problem.

"Waiting it out" usually doesn't fix plumbing problems but I've seen clogged drains "unclog" before I arrive at the house to clean it.

Is that small tube still stuck down in the overflow pipe as it should?...or did it fly out of there? This is what recharges your bowl with fresh water and builds up the height of water in the bowl. Note, that if it is out, never stick it way down the overflow tube, as it wil syphon water out of the tank and cause the fill valve to keep trying to fill, and waste water, big time. Only stick it in about 1 inch, or higher than what the water level is in the tank.
