toilet leaking around bolt

I installed a new toilet and now it is leaking around the tank to bowl bolt on the right side. I have tried tightening it but it actually seems to be leaking more as I tighten it. I am afraid to tighten it any more because I am afraid the tank will break (That is the reason I had to replace it in the first place). My house is very old and the floor is not level....could that be the problem? Short of leveling the floor, is there anything else I can do? Thanks.

If you tighten the bolt down too much you'll squeeze the rubber washer out from below it causing it to leak. Take out the bolt and check the rubber washer for damage. If it isn't too deformed put it back and tighting the bolt to when it just starts to pull down the tank, then a little hair more. It doesn't take much.

I tried that and it is still leaking. I am wondering if I put anything on the bolt in the wrong order. Let me know if I am doing it right. I put the rubber gasket on the bolt and slipped the bolt through the holes in the tank. Put the tank on top of toilet. Is there supposed to be a gasket or anything between the tank and toilet? Then I slipped a metal gasket on the bolt from underneath and put the nut on and tightened. thanks again for your advice.

There should be a big rubber gasket that goes between the bowl and the tank that looks like this (http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/6982/tankgasketth2.jpg)

Depends on the type assembly.

Some assemblies have what is described above, some dont. I would guess the original rubber gasket is now deformed and won't seal. Trying the easiest/cheapest thing first - get a new washer and try to reseat.

When I put a tank on a bowl, I first hand tighten both sides. Then applying pressure to the top of the tank, I continue to hand tighten one side, then the other until I get no leaks. Only then do I put a wrench on the nut to tighten another 1/4 - 1/2 turn.

It's also possible the tank has already cracked at the bolt hole - which will require a new tank replacement.
