I have started noticing that our toilet will run for about 5-8 seconds, then shut off. If not used, the same think will happen several hours later. This seems to occur throughout the day.
I have not done anything to troubleshoot, as I don't know where to start, or to start buying parts. Thanks for the forum.

The most likely by far reason for this is that the flapper or whatever type of tank ball this toilet uses has deteriorated to the point where it no longer seals properly causing seepage of the water in the tank. When the water level drops the toilet refills.Replace the flapper or whatever form of tank ball the toilet has.Remove the existing tank ball and take it with you to a hardware store for proper matching of a replacement ball.Be aware that rubber residue will come off on your hands etc.
