Changing a drain assembly
Is it possible to change a drain assembly to match new faucets. I have found discussion about doing so but no discussion on how to actually do it or how difficult it is. We are buiding a new house and the builder is wanting to charge us 4X greater than retail locaiton to upgrade the faucets to something acceptable. I am wondering if we can do this after the fact AND have matching drain assemblies. All faucets are Moen. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Not sure I understand. If you are going from brass to chrome or vice versa, you need to change everything. As for the faucet themselves, you can't just swap the visible part of the fixture, even sometimes on the same manufacturer. And replacing the valve assy is not easy, lots of labor expense.

changing a drain assembly
Hi Bill,
yes, My inquiry was how to change the drain assembly (in addition to the faucet itself, which I already know how to do) it was a question of is it possible to actually change a drain assembly and what the talent level needed is. E.g. super Dumb question Does the drain assembly get permanently "adhered" to the sink, if so, how do you remove the adhesive.
Thanks

If you can change a faucet out, you can change a drain assembly. The drains do not get adhered to the lavatories, they are sealed with plumbers putty just below the ring you see in the bottom of the sink. Underneath the sink there is a paper gasket and/or rubber ring and a metal nut to tighten the assembly and pull things together to seal. The hardest part for the DIYer is probably just holding the assembly in place while tightening! New bathroom faucets come with the drain assemblies, in kitchens they are purchased separately. One of the plumbing DIY books at the box stores will show you all this, or read some assembly instructions (downloadable from vendor web sites).

Any faucet you buy comes with a matching po assembly so everything matches.
Be carefull of the quality though, dont buy glacier bay from hd
I get service calls for these faucets all the time and most of them are not even a year old.
You will pay more for moen, american standard, kohler, etc. but you get what you pay for in most cases. Sometimes you can get the drain without the faucet.
