Fluidmaster 501 flappers sticking up.

After the cheap-o generic black flappers in our house were falling apart, I replaced all of them with Fluidmaster 501's.

With about 20% of flushes, one of the following problems happens:

1) The chain gets tangled, keeping the flapper from closing.
2) The hook at the handle end flips upside down, pulling the chain too taut, keeping the flapper from closing.
3) The flapper just sticks upwards because it hates me.

I can't shorten the chain any more or there will not be enough chain for the flapper to seat. I already tried the straw trick and it didn't help.

On the plus side, it doesn't leak when it manages to close...

Simple solution

Had the same problem at my girlfriend's house. The biggest problem is the chain; tends to bind. Replace it with thin nylon cord. Nylon is strong, slippery (won't get hung up) and actually lasts longer when wet than when dry. Use a knot so you don't need metal s-hook, another source of trouble.
