Short tub spout nipple

I am trying to replace my non-diverter style tub spout in my tub/shower. It appears that my nipple is too short for these "standard" replacement parts. My nipple is approx 3 1/2" and I think I need it to be around 4". Oh, 1/2" threaded pipe. Can I make an extension? Any other suggestions?

If it is a pipe, you can likely unscrew the old and replace it with one the proper length, but use brass, not steel. If it is a piece of copper with a threaded end soldered on, it may not unscrew from the back side. In that case, you could use a copper coupling and solder on an extension, after cutting the old end.
