Tank not seating properly

In order to get some painting done, I removed the tank from my toilet. I figured while I was down there I'd change out the spud washer and the bolts. Now when I replace the tank, it seems to sit differently on the bowl, and there does not appear to be room against the wall to let it seat properly (I can tell this both by a VERY leaky flush and by using a flashlight behind the toilet and seeing light come through). There is clearly a gap between the tank and bowl due to the tank being up against the wall. I've tried the old spud washer and there is the same problem... I'm guessing that when it was seated last something else must have been done to complete the seal.

Any ideas for making the spud seat properly in the bowl?? One option would be to move the toilet away from the wall a half inch or so. But that might be a lot of work... would appreciate any insights...

thanks in advance!

There are several different profiles of washers, make sure you have the correct one.
