No water pressure from the shower head

Water pressure out of the tub faucet is good, but when you pull the thing up to turn on the shower no water comes out of the shower head. Any suggestions?

Does it have the knob on the spout that you lift, or a lever or rod attached to the valve on the wall?

If its the knob on the spout, all that does is block the water flow and force it up the pipe to the showerhead. Remove the showerhead from the pipe coming out of the wall and check for flow.

Well, does the water stop from the spout when you pull up on it?

If it does, then you need to check the showerhead as I suggested. If it doesn't, then you need to replace the spout most likely.

There is some water coming out of the faucet. The water pressure is good when you first turn on the shower, for about a minute and then it makes a whining sound and quits all together. So we turn the water off, wait for a minute or two, turn it back on and repeat.

Well, thats not the same as what you first posted, but it's still the same suggestions to fix. Have you taken the shower head off the arm to observe what it does?

If you don't follow through on the suggested steps, it won't ever get fixed.
