Shower Pan --Yes/no ???

I have a new Recessed Shower and was told by the saleperson at the tile store that i need a shower pan. OK.
So I just ran into my plumber and he said its not required since the shower is recessed.
Any Help is appreciated,
BobHud

Thats not enough information. Is the shower installed? Is the shower built in? what is your drain lay-out? are you just planning to install tile on the floor?

Did the plumber put a rubber/PVC membrane in before any 'crete was placed? There needs to be a sloped bed, then the membrane, sealed to the drain, then the surface for the tile placed. Thats just the basics...not a Pro here...they could be more specific on requirements.

If it's just concrete with a drain in the center...thats wrong. Thinset mortar, grout, and concrete are not waterproof.

If the salesperson said that you shouldn't put tile down without building a water proof PAN before you lay the tile he is correct, like Gunguy45 said concrete is not waterproof.

Shower Pan - YES

Just to clarify, if you are building a shower from the ground up CHECK YOUR BUILDING CODES!! for the most part a shower built from the ground up should follow this basic outline:
Pre-Slope mortar bed on subfloor
shower pan installation
Vapor barrier in place
cement board on walls
mortar bed installed
tiling.
Is i said this is a basic outline. There are many products available to make this an easy do-it-your-self project.
I have recently switched to a product called the**** they have 15 standard sizes as well as custom sizes available. They come in a complete kit to ensure you don't make mistakes,it also has an step buy step installation video and complete step by step illustrated instructions (which also can be viewed online). When I put my first one in I called them at least 20 times because it was so easy i thought I must be making a mistake and there customer service was fantastic, friendly helpful and accommodating. You can get all the information you need about shower pan installation on their website at ****** I hope this helps
