Toilet not flushing correctly

I've looked at other posts similar and can't seem to figure out what the problem is. If I flush it, it just kind of slowly rotates and water fills it up. It takes several flushes to get any toilet paper to go down. The only way I can get anything to get down other than that is to plunge it. If I plunge it, it all goes down. I checked the water level and the chain. The valve goes up vertically when it flushes and stays that way until all of the water has gone out of the tank that needs to. I even cleaned the holes underneath the rim the best that I could, but water is coming out of them fine so I don't think that's the problem.

It's been this way for a while and I've just now gotten around to trying to work on it. I haven't had a lot of time. I do have a toddler and I am hoping she didn't put anything in it, but I don't think she knows how to flush it yet. I really don't have a lot of money right now so I am trying to do it myself without calling a plumber, but I also don't want to mess anything up. Suggestions?

Buy or rent a toilet auger. Use is and post back the results.

Sounds like from what you describe that something is in the toilet itself.

It sure sounds like a clog to me. You may be able to open it up with a snake.

Wait 'til Larosa checks in. He is a pro and may offer a better suggestion.

Looks like he dropped in while I was typing.
