How to remove older plastic (Moen?) tap cartridge (valve stem)?

The water in our shower can never be turn off completely as these handles just keep spinning around and around. So, we want to replace the valve stems (or are they called cartridges) and the handles. Does anyone know what make and model these are (handle says Moen) and how they are removed?

I took some pictures with my phone but, they didn't come out that clearly.

Any help would be appreciated,

Fran

Yes they can be removed. There is a "U" shaped clip that must be removed from the front top side. The cartridge will slip out. Look up Moen on the web and the factory will have complete details. BTW...you have a two handle vs a single lever cartridge.

I got as far as removing everything to what you can see in my 3rd picture.

What are we looking at in the 3rd pic in my post (the white plastic pieces)? Is that the stem extension and the cartridge nut.

Tried putting a wrench on the large plastic nut and turning but it just spins.

What am I doing wrong?

I think this is the set up we have

No norm thats for single lever units...

Yes that is the extension fran. You will need to remove the threaded piece there to get to the cart..

There may be another nut to remove and a special tool needed..

Click on the wide spread faucet in this tutorial..

Let's start this over, as to the actual problem.

The water in our shower can never be turn off completely as these handles just keep spinning around and around.

What is causing this??

My thinking is that the tab on the bottom of the stem extention is broken and not engaging the cartridge.

Am I way off base, or in the ball park? Thoughts?

I am trying to remove the cartidge nut so that I can replace the stem extention so, I put a wrench on the nut but it just spins.

Is there some sort of trick to removing this piece?
