Kitchen sink drain, can't screw on gasket?

Hello,

I've just moved into a new house and there is a small problem with one of the kitchen sinks.

Underneath the sink, where the drain is threaded, the rubber gasket and plastic ring that hold the gasket on have fallen off and are just hanging loose. See here: imgur: the simple image sharer

Of course this means the drain leaks.

Anyways, I cannot get the ring to catch the threads on the underside of the drain. From what I can see the threads on the ring look fine so I'm guessing the drain threads are stripped or ruined somehow (they're covered in plumber's tape right now).

What are my options here? Can I glue or caulk that gasket and ring on? Should I get a new drain installed? It's a built-in Corian sink, if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance!

Replace all of it. It won't cost much & it will save you aggravation.

Welcome to the forums....

Replace the strainer. The strainer threads should not have tap on them anyway. Teflon paste if anything...

Thanks guys! Can't believe how easy that was.

Almost

The baskets available at the store were too short, not enough thread got through under my sink.

But, it turned out it was the nut that had been stripped and the existing baskets were okay. I just took them out and cleaned them with a wire brush. Then, the same old baskets and replacement nuts and the sinks are as good as new!

I appreciate the help,

-Ben
