Rusty Garbage Disposal

My kitchen sink started draining very slow today while I was washing dishes. I tried to run the disposal to see if there was a blockage. It drained right away and then immediately started filling up. I tried again and the same thing happens. I let it drain and both sides of the sink will drain but back up after the water runs. I felt around in the sink where the disposal is and it feels like there is some hardened buildup of some kind. My disposal is old and when I looked at it, there is some rust on the unit. Could my disposal be the cause of the slow drain? We had a plumber out just a few years ago to snake the exhaust for this sink and I use a strainer over the drain to catch most stuff.

Thanks and I hope I am clear in describing this.

It would help to have a picture of under sink plumbing to see if it is installed properly.

If disposer is rusted, it's time to get a new one. There are people here that can walk you through installing new one and maybe making a few alterations to plumbing if needed.
The major brand disposers are very user friendly, easy to install.
