shower floor - hardiboard ontop of preslope?

I have hired a contractor to install my custom tile shower floor. The shower is roughly 4' x 7'. the subfloor is OSB. He put down a moisture barrier on the floor then mortar mix as the preslope. However, before the preslope cured, he installed 1/4" hardibacker board on the floor over the mortar preslope. This final step has me concerned.

This weekend I was going to install the vinyl liner and put 1/2" hardi board on the walls. I had let the preslope cure for 3 days. However, I discovered lots of movement with the hardiboard. it feels hollow underneath in several spots like the hardiboard is not in contact with the preslope floor. I cannot find any info online that suggest installing hardiboard over a preslope.

Is this something that is normally done? IF not, should I attempt to remove the hardiboard? Should I be concerned that my contractor doesn't know what he is doing?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Find a new contractor, you don't use hardi or and cbu on shower floors.

Here are the steps -

15# felt
Wire Lath
Pre-Slope Bed Mortar
PVC pan liner
2nd Sloped Bed Mortar
Tile

I would stop while you are at a point where you can salvage, although, I am not sure about the moisture barrier you say he put down. I would also like to see a picture of the drain body he planned on using.

Pictures of what you have would really help. Do as Z said. It seems our favorite link has disappeared showing the proper way to build a preslope pan for a shower. I'll keep searching and let you know. Your contractor needs to go.

Larry, I'm hoping that there is just a burp on the ontario tile site, otherwise we will have to create a demo of our own.

Can anyone direct me to instructions on how to upload photos? I've tried both from files from my computer and from website. The file size isn't too big but upload fails every time. Thanks.

You can't upload the Mona Lisa, so reduce the size of your pictures a little. I believe 1080 is about the size used. My phone takes pictures that are always too large. I have to reduce their size to 25% of the original for them to fit.

As previously mentioned, our favorite link to how to build a shower pan with pre-slope has stopped working. However, I have found another excellent tutorial that will give you enough ammo to have an intelligent discussion with your contractor. Note that I prefer a couple of additional steps not mentioned in the tutorial - 1. inset 2x10 blocking between the studs to support the pan liner. 2. Install the wall vapor barrier and cement board and curb lath before the 2nd mudbed in installed. 3. Use outside corner corner damn covers to waterproof the curb corners. 4. Make sure that the final slope on the curb slopes back toward the shower.

It is a 5 part series, here is the link to part 1 (others are found at the bottom of each page) = How to Create a Shower Floor – Part 1

Keep up posted, we will check back after work today.
