Shower knob is loose and broken

I was taking a shower and The water was hot, even tho I had the knob in the middle. I turned it in cold but still hot coming out, lol. Thought I was going crazy. After inspecting the knob, it was just really loose and I am not sure what to do. I think something inside is broken. I tried to pull it out but I have to brake it in order to do it. my shower system was never open so I am not sure what to do.

Only way to find out what's broken is to take it apart.
Pop off that chrome cap and remove the screw under it, then pull the handle off.
Any further will require shutting off both the hot and cold water supply's.
Very common valve, any plumbing supply, Box store, Hardware should have a new cartrage.

Ok, after searching , I guess it was that easy. But any specific recommendation? alot of them have bad reviews at home depot.

It's hard to see the insert but I see the screw that held the knob on is bent and it looks likethe knob is cracked. You may just need to replace the knob and screw. Take it to a home improvement store for a replacement.

Looks like the handle broke and can no longer turn the cartridge. Take a needle nose pliers and see if you can get the water to turn on and adjust relatively easily with the handle off. Pull on the center oval section to turn the water on and rotate left and right to change temperature. My concern is that the cartridge is bad and that is why the handle broke. If everything still operates fairly easily, just take the plastic handle to the box store and look for the replacment parts area. They should have one that matches what you have. If the cartridge is bad (the part still in the wall), check back for further instructions.

Ok, this is the parts I found that match. It also came with a metal washer that fits the knob but I was unable to pull it out after putting it in. Also, now When I have the knob out fully in cold or hot, I have water coming out of the knob.
