shower drain odor
over the last 3 months my one shower drain has periodically been producing a sewer type odor. We have 2 showers in the house but only one has started with this problem. I put clorox or pine sol down the drain when it smells which eliminates the odor but it reoccurs intermittently. We have lived in the house for many years and this is a new problem. Any ideas on this?

Two things come to mind.
1-The water in the trap in the shower drain evaporates letting sewer gas in due to infrequent use. If you can access the trap from the drain, put something down to the trap to see if there is water the next time you get the odor.
2- There is a slow water leak in the trap in the shower drain. If the shower is on the 1st floor, go to the basement and look for the leak. If the shower is on the 2nd floor, look at the first floor ceiling in the area of the trap for signs of dampness.

Could also be a vent problem where when the toilet is flushed it is siphoning the water out of the trap of the shower to make up for the air it needs to move the water down the line.
