Question Why would renovators grout-in the shower drain cover?

Name: image.jpg

Size: 32.9 KBMy renovating company grouted-in the drain cover on my new shower.

What do you think the rationale for this would be? Is this a typical modern practice?

Do you foresee any long-term issues with this?

Because it is much easier to make poor square cuts than make the round cuts required in the tile to go with the drain cover that came with the drain body. Should not have any bearing on your shower performance, only if you need to clean hair out of the drain will you find an issue.

Of bigger concern, and no real way of knowing is the offset nature of the drain body itself. It doesn't look like a traditional multi-part drain body and I question the use of proper liner. But without further info, I can not make that call. I've never seen a shower drain offset like that, floor drain - yes, not a shower drain.

I'll have to concur with Z in that it appears to be a floor drain with two screw holes for a round cover. Is there a way to tell if the installer used a PVC liner? It would be interesting to see that hole without the cover in place.

You are right about that, Joe!

I have my contractor coming back to fix a leaky wax seal on the new toilet, and am going to query him about the shower drain cover. So far he said there's nothing to worry about. lol

I do not yet know if there is a PVC liner, chandler.
