Garbage disposal problem

Our garbage disposal has a problem. It's like one of those old propellor aircraft where you have to manually spin the propeller to get it to engage. It works just fine, runs smoothly. It just doesn't start on its own.

A couple months ago it got jammed. I cleaned out some stuck broken pieces of a chopstick that somehow got in there. After that everything was spinning freely. But it just won't start on its own without shoving a wooden spoon in there, giving the blades a push start and immediately flipping the switch on.

Any ideas on what's going on here and if it's something I can repair? I like pretending I'm starting up a Sopwith Camel whenever I'm cleaning up from dinner, but my wife doesn't find it enjoyable and I don't want to shell out for a new unit. This one is 6 years old.

Thanks

Sounds like you will need a new one. I know of no repairs to be made on one.

You actually stick something in the disposal with the power on to start it? This can't end well. Time for a replacement, just for safety's sake. If you are on a septic system, you aren't doing it any good, either. I would not recommend disposals on a septic system.

I personally don't look at a disposer as being repairable.
A decent and common disposer is the ISE Badger 5. They run about $100 or a little less.

You might be able to find a used one. When I tear out kitchens, I save the really nice disposers, often they are in very good shape and I will give them away or sell them cheap.
