Toilet not filling

Hi, I'm getting a new toilet put in downstairs - the old one was leaking so plumber came to look at it. I need a new one so he's shut off the water to the downstairs one til he can come back. My upstairs toilet is now not filling up with water after flushing.. wondering if this is connected or a coincidence. Can anyone help? I'm a total novice by the way & hubby is away with work... thanks

Welcome to the forums Tracy!

I assume the plumber shut off the downstairs commode at the valve behind/below it which would just shut off that commode. Have you pulled the cover off of the upstairs commode? Sometimes the fill valve will stick, giving it a little wiggle or pushing it down will often get it going again.

If the isolation valve for the replacement toilet was defective, he may have shut off both feeds to the bathrooms. Do you have water to the sinks?

I wouldn't guess this is a coincidence, there's probably nothing wrong with the other toilet.
The plumber was probably having trouble with replacing the valve and needed to shut off more water than desired.

You can flush the toilet with a bucket of water.

Make sure he also replaces that shut off valve if it turns out it was leaking.
It would be interesting to hear how a leaking toilet justify's having to replace the whole toilet.
Leaking where?
