shower leaking into basement

My shower is leaking when a shower is being taken. It doesn't leak when I turn the water on or pour water into the tub from a bucket...only when I pull the diverter up to send the water to the shower head. There is no way to get to the piping from behind other than opening up the wall in the shower. Any ideas before I call in a plumber? Also will a good plumber fix the wall if he opens it up?

If you pull the diverter up, will it leak downstairs even if no one is in the shower? If it does, try to tighten the nipple. That is the piece that goes into the wall behind the shower head.

yes it does leak when no one is in the shower. Is the nipple the "arm" that the shower head is screwed into? If it is only me in the house how would that have come loose if I never touched it? I will try it in the morning. I hope that is the problem.

Ok I tried to see if I could tighten the nipple but I do not see it. It must be behind the wall and there is no way to get behind it

What he was referring too is the nipple that the shower head is screwed onto. Need to remove the shower head then the nipple, then reinstall with good sealant to see if that might be the one.

Problem is there are several joints in there that could be leaking.

Generally the plumber just does plumbing!
