Slow drip out of seemingly intentional hole in back of shower assembly

The back assembly of the shower, not sure what it's called but where the water lines are directed to the handles in the front, has a drip and the water just drips down into a bed of gravel (tub is on the ground floor). It's a slow drip and the hole isn't a break but rather a smooth circle.
Because the hole seems to have been manufactured as such I don't want to plug it up but at the same time, if this tub were on the top floor we'd have a water leak problem.
Can anyone share insight into this?
(The attached pic doesn't show much but it's the best I could capture given the limited space)

Hard to tell, but I would guess it's there to accommodate some option that wasn't used. I would turn off the water and take it off to see what's supposed to be sealing it (pipe threads or o-ring) and replace/repair as necessary.

The hole itself is smooth and ~1/4" in diameter and unthreaded so it wouldn't appear anything should be there.
I'll run the shower and see if water spurts out.
Regardless I figure the whole system *should* be sealed and I'll get some waterproof tape and see if I can get it in there.

Can you open your picture in Paint and circle the hole and post that here?

I believe I've circled the hole but I remember it's far down there

Sounds like somebody tried to hang a picture and hit it with a nail or while drilling a hole.

not in that location. the hole is too smooth. also the opposing wall is a closet and the hole would be at the very bottom by the floor.

There is no reason for an 'intentional' hole in a water pipe that supplies water to a shower mixer.

Since it's near a closet, that may be a reasonable place to open the wall to access it for repairs.
