How to troubleshoot toilet tank from refilling every so often?

Every couple of hours the toilet tank refills. It must have slowly losing water. It's extremely annoying when it's refilling in the middle of night or 3AM in the morning. How do I go about troubleshooting and fix this issue?

Most likely the flapper is leaking. The water has to be going somewhere. A dye tablet in the tank may confirm, but if the leak is very slow, the only true test is to shut off the water supply and see if the tank level drops in a few hours. Regarding flappers, I have had the best luck with Korky's. Also, run a fingernail around the seat for the flapper to assure there are no nicks to allow a slow leak.

Awesome! Thank you. I'll shut off the water supply and see what happens.
