Sealing Bathroom Sink Drain

I'm replacing a bathroom sink faucet. For sealing the drain, I've read a bunch of the debates on silicone caulk vs. plumber's putty, and have decided to go with silicone. Now when I tighten down the drain collar, the excess is going to ooze out, but how do I clean up? Do I try to wipe it off immediately using something like mineral spirits, or do I let it cure as is and come back later with a razor and cut around the drain? Will the excess then peel right off? Never done this before, so need some of your tips here.

Clean off the excess right away. Use cloth rags and mineral spirits or denatured alcohol.

I use plumbers putty on pop up flanges, but it is not recommend for use on cultured marble tops or plastic pop ups.
