Intermittent running toilet
I have a Kohler toilet. Occasionally it will keep running after the flush. Did food dye test, nothing in the bowl. Where to start the next step of diagnosis? it has typical Kohler canister type of flush valve. Thanks.

Usual reason a toilet keeps running is the chain kinks, Can you jiggle the handle a stop it? I took the chain off mine and tied nylon string on it and have not had this problem in 6 months.

Kohler flappers sometimes have a styrofoam float on the chain that helps time the flush... and keep the chain up and out of the way so that it's not caught under the flapper. If you have that type, it's possible your float came off and got flushed, causing the problem pugsl mentioned.

I used string because I have tried all different ways to stop this. Found string worked the best. Do not use cotton string as it will come apart in water over time.

If it is dribbling water, the flapper is probably leaking. You can test this by putting a little food coloring into the top tank. If the colored water eventually leaks into the bowl on its own without being flushed, (depending on how bad its leaking, it may take 5-10 minutes or up to an hour so to be really noticeable) the flush valve flapper is leaking.
Sometimes you can just replace the flapper (the part the chain pulls up when you flush) but other times you should replace the entire flush valve so that you get a new seat and matching flapper.

I tested with food dye. Nothing in the bowl overnight.
My problem is once in a while after flushing, the toilet keeps running, until I jiggle the handle a couple of times. it doesn't happen every time, so it is hard for me to duplicate what has happened.

If you have to jiggle the handle, the chain is probably hanging up and your flapper is open, like we already discussed. The chain should not have much slack when the flapper is closed. A rusty chain will sometimes catch on itself instead of dangling freely.
It also could be that your handle is sticking and not falling back down after you let go.
Can't say which it is, you would have to take the lid off when it is running and see which is the problem.

I fought this problem for years. Tried all different lengths of chain. Only way I stopped it was with a string instead of chain.
