how to remove old kitchen sink drain

I need to get the old drain out in order to replace it, but there are two pieces underneath that will not come off to let me take out the drain. The two pieces are metal, each with three rounded edges, the bottom one with holes from special screws that push up against the top ;iece. I dried prying to bottom piece off, but it will not come, nor does it screw off. Please let me know how to get those pieces off.

Sounds like a garbage disposal ring. You loosen the 3 screws underneath as far as you can. Then there is a 3" diameter slip ring that you have to pry off the outside of the drain body with a slotted screwdriver. Once you pull that slip ring off, the rest of the pieces will come out. Sometimes the trim ring is silicone in... it takes a little effort to pry it out.
