Replacing Moen Cartridge - have I ruined the faucet?

I have a single handle Moen bathroom faucet. The hot water had stopped coming out so after verifying that it wasn't a supply line problem, I purchased a new cartridge. The old one was completely stuck and the plastic cap was stripping from my wrench so I decided to just break the old one out with a screwdriver and hammer as I figured the new cartridge came with a new cap. However, after putting in the new cartridge, water is leaking out of the top now matter how much I tighten. Here is what the inside of the base looks like before I put the cartridge in:

Sorry for the quality and size of shot. The threads seem quite rough now and it's black from the old cartridge plastic that seemed like it was practically glued in.

Is the my problem and if so, it is salvageable or do need to purchase a new faucet?
