Tub drain gasket

I am trying to replace a tub drain. When I removed the old drain, I noticed that there is no rubber gasket between the tub and the pipe underneath. Instead, what appeared to be silicone was used between the tub/pipe all the way up to the top underneath the old drain. I tried removing this (silicone) but am sure there still must be small pieces that are stuck between the bottom of the tub and the top of the pipe. What would be the best thing to use when I install the new drain? Will putty between the drain and tub be sufficient to seal, or do I need to use silicone or a new rubber gasket between the tub/pipe? I am worried that because of the small pieces left of whatever was there before, neither new silicone nor a rubber gasket will seal completely.
