Shower drain now making noise when using water.

Just lately my shower drain is making noise when using water. I checked for water in the P trap and can not see any. The house was built in 1972 and i think the plumber used a cast iron trap that had a metal tang jutting down. There is tile in the floor and need ideas on how to fix. Tear up tile and replace whole p trap? Go under house and cut cast iron pipe and install a p trap using rubber sleeves? Is this a DYI task or plumber?

The trap may not be directly under the drain so you wouldn't necessarily see water looking down.
Is the drain overflowing.... not draining properly ?
If the drain were operating normally I don't think I'd change the trap.

if the shower is draining OK but gurgling when other fixtures are being used, look at the house vent system. If the trap is dry pour in some water and start using fixtures throughout the house to see if one of them is trying to vent through the shower drain.

Drain is working fine now, but still with noise, but several weeks ago the drain was only draining slow and I used a plunger to loosen up drain pipe. Have not gone under house lately to look at p trap. Plan on doing so today. The drain does not make noise when other water is used in the house. Will check how far from the down pipe the p trap is located.
