Toilet Flapper Help
Aren't Toilet Flappers supposed to be universal? I had one in my garage that had an adjustment at the bottom for how big the hole for the water. I tried a few of the holes, and it kept emptying the tank before the flapper would go down.
I went to the hardware store today, and bought a flapper that looked like the one I took out only it didn't have a styrofoam float. Same results. I rigged up the styrofoam float with same results. I returned that one, and went to a different hardware store where I bought the one below.

What exactly does the float do, and why didn't the other flappers work for me? I know you can adjust the chains which I did. This flapper I didn't have to adjust, cause I Know how much slack is supposed to be there. I just had to move the styrofoam float a little.

Toilet flappers are not universal though there is one type that is more common than the others.
The float on the chain helps keep the chain from getting caught under the flapper. Most flappers do not use floats.
