Confused about flush valve

My toilet flush valve is leaking. It makes a trickling sound for a couple seconds and then the fill valve activates and a shot of water comes out or the fill tube for about one second...and on and on. My question is this...
The fill tube squirts into the overflow tube. The overflow tube empties into the bowl. So, when the leaking flapper causes a need for more water and activates the fill valve which is inserted into the overflow tube (not the tank itself) how does this refill the tank? Get it?

It just occurred to me that the refill tube which shoots into the overflow tube is actually refilling the bowl. So I guess my refined question is... where is the water, which fills the tank, coming out of the fill valve?

Turn off the water to the toilet. Then hold the flush handle down until all the water has drained from the tank. Then when you turn the water back on you can see where the water comes out.
