How to remove a rusty Waste King

I am not sure if rusty is the right word but anyway this is what it looks like:

I used a hammer to knock the ring to no avail. I am thinking about using a soldering iron to remove the rubber holder (the small protruding thing).

Assuming you are going to replace it, I'd just use a recip saw with a fine metal cutting blade, or an angle grinder with a cutoff disc to cut through the bottom of the basket. You could probably even do it with a hacksaw, but it will take a while.

No harm in trying your way first...although it will stink a bit.

Thank you,CarbideTipped. I took your advice. I do not have suitable saw for that space, so I used a soldering iron to sever the flange. Yes, it stinks. The smoke went up, so it was not too bad underneath the sink.
