A friend is spending a semester in Australia and I'd like to send a gift of money. The obvious thing to do is mail a check, but can an Australian bank deal with a U.S. check? What is the best way to send some money to another country?

I would think that a certified check issued by a bank would be easier for your friend to cash than your personal check. You could also consider travelers checks. I would probably just wire the money with western union.

I would try....

I would try either Western Union or PayPal as the best way to send money overseas.

Of course, now, with ATM machines, it makes it convenient to get money from your bank. It may be easier to deposit the funds into the bank beforehand so you're not dealing with cash, per se.
