Irs

For the last several years the IRS has sent us a letter claiming we might be eligible for earned income credit. Both age and investment income exclude us from the credit and both are clearly noted on the tax forms sent in - so why are they wanting me to apply for a credit I'm not entitled to

Could be a phishing scheme.

A guess is they are not looking at your investment income.
This may not apply to you but they see you are maybe low income (without the investments).

My wife works part time, we both collect social security [which you only count half off on 1040] so even including my investment income our tax liability is low

Could be a scheme by the IRS to later impose fines for trying to get something you don't qualify for
