I didn't want to mis-lead anyone into thinking that deep snow only hits places up north or back east when there are pockets out west too, where the snow can get the upper hand. Here's one up in California's Sierra Nevadas . . . . what do we call these "Ocean Effect" ?

I don't think you can wait until it stops snowing . . . . you have to start while there are a few milestones to guide you. Otherwise, without highway markers, it's just a white wasteland and you have to revert to snowshoes.

Seeing the depth of this snow can help us to understand the trevails of "The Donner Party" in this same Sierra Nevada area, when they lost their race against the weather in November of 1846.

There were no street signs back then, and snowplows and blowers hadn't yet been invented. They had to create their own ideas for what would have to serve as fast food.

For all of our complaints these days . . . . it's really not such a bad time to eek out a living !
