adhesive removal

I tore up the vinyl floor, but the backing and adhesive won't come up. All attempts at scraping have only gouged out the underlayment.
Is there a chemical, or remover that will help in the adhesive removal, or is it just easier to tear up the old underlayment and start over?
The under layment is 1/4 in plywood.

Replace the underlayment.
Removing vinyl from plywood is not worth the effort.

Vinyl and Linoleum Flooring
White tile turned yellow/brown

I have 12x12 vinyl tile in my kitchen. 11 years old. Most of it is still white, but there is an area of about 8 tiles (traffic area by refrigerator and dog's drinking water) that has turned a yellowish brown color. I have tried ammonia, bleach (not at the same time!), Comet cleanser, SOS pads, and Armstrong Floor Cleaner. None of them have done anything other than clean - no change in tile color. Is there a way to get the white back on these 8 tiles? Or do I just need to replace them or re-tile the kitchen? Thanks. judyRead More

We have vinyl tile (12x12) flooring in our kitchen. I believe they are the self-adhesive kind, but I am not totally sure, as they were installed before we purchased the home. Several tiles by the back door are pulling up at the corners. In fact upon closer inspection it seems that about 1/2 of the ones in the area by the back door are pulling up...some in the high traffic area and some not. Also a few located by the heating register under the counters have slid out of place by 1/4 to 3/8 an inch. How should we go about replacing these? Were they poorly installed? Should we replace all the flooring or just the tiles that are coming up? If we replace just the ones that are coming up, how do we go about pulling out the old ones and cleaning and prepping the are for the new ones? Should we use more adhesive than just the self-sticky?
