installing underlayment

3/8 particle board is commonly used for sheet vinyl underlayment. would you butt the u/layment sheets tight together or leave a gap and fill and sand?

plywood plywood plywood
particle board will soak up adhesive before it get's a chance to cure.

Where i come from particle wood is never used as an underlayment,you use either luan or multiply but tight and then patch and sand

Butt them or the gaps will eventually show thru the vinyl. If you use plywood, make sure the bad spots are filled and sanded.........same reason.
