I wouldn't lay the ceramic directly over the vinyl floor. You can either remove the existing floor or lay thin plywood over it. Make sure you seal the joints and screw heads before you lay the tiles.

ceramic tile on top of vinyl?

I currently have a handyman placing ceramic tiles over vinyl. This area is fairly small: laundry room (maybe 4ft x 6 ft). I had advised against it, but he insists this won't be a problem. I brought this up twice, but he said I am worrying for no reason. I am really confused.
