sheet flooring self cove installation

Last Dec., Wittenburg Flooring laid down a promotional vinyl by Mannington with a 1-yr. guarantee on top of a pre-existing dirty vinyl floor. The floor bubbled. They also did the carpet. When I moved in Jan. 28`00 it had a "new" smell that burned my eyes. I wiped up the vinyl and thought it would diminish. It came and went, usually late morning and early afternoon. It got stronger and stronger and I noticed that the kitchen floor smelled very sour at times and my eyes burned and there was a very strong vinyl odor and I got groggy headaches and on April 8 and 30th it was so bad I had to leave. Wittenberg Floors said they never heard of that and it must be a maintenance problem. When maintenance was there the odor was faint and they said that's the way vinyl smells. So I paid to have the kitchen floor, both layers, removed. I sent samples of the old floor to Mannington and they told me there was moisture related mildew smell and that the old vinyl floor was not properly cleaned. Wittenberg Floors says it used Mannington products, but I don't believe that. None of their products were dark brown and there was dark brown product between the two layers of vinyl. The old floor smelled when it wanted to and I saved a piece of it but no one, including the health dept.was interested.When I finally got rid of the last piece of old floor, I put it in my car 1 day and those fumes were worse than in my apartment. The new vinyl was in my car for 2 weeks and never smelled or emitted fumes. The building I live in has hot water heat and is extremely humid. I had to buy a dehumidifier for my entryway. Wittenberg put the same promotional vinyl on top of my bathroom floor, which was different, and my bathroom has never emitted fumes. Only my kitchen. Since I had the floor redone by another contractor, there is only a small trace of the glue-like odor by my entryway, off and on, which is carpeted. I don't know if they used a cheap glue or if they didn't do the job right in the first place but that kitchen floor really acted up and the toxic fumes that burned my eyes and made me very groggy haven't been identified yet. I think it's from some cheap glue. Sure smelled like it. Any similar experiences from anyone?

Can anyone tell me what kind of floor this is and how to clean it? We pulled up the carpeting in the hall and foyer of this old stone house we just bought. Underneath is this really neat floor. It is about 1/4 inch thick and resembles linoleum but it is not.It is a dark red/black and gold swirled pattern if that helps any. There are no scratches or scuff marks on it.Thanks for any help.
