How do I know??

I have vinyl flooring in all 3 of my bathrooms and my laundry room. I'd like to put some new stuff down but am not sure where to start. From what I understand if it was installed properly to begin with it should currently be glued to 1/4 plywood which should be on top of the subfloor (I have a basement with 3/4 sub)

The question is how do I tell for sure that there is 1/4" underneath? Don't I have to cut the old 1/4" out and put new down along with the new flooring? The only way I know how is to plung a skillsaw 1/4" down to find out for sure. I can't just put new vinyl over the top can I (my current stuff is embosed)?

remove a heating register and look at the side of the floor.

You could install another layer of 1/4" underlayment and then the new floor.
