hardwood over asbestos tile

I want to put hardwood flooring in my house, I pulled up part of the carpet and my contractor said there was asbestos tile underneath so he wouldn't do the job. Can a subfloor be installed on top of the asbestos tile and then have the hardwood installed or should I just relace the carpet. I really don't want to go to the expense of having asbestos abatement.
Thanks for any insight.

An option is to install a floating engineered wood floor. This would leave the asbestos floor covering intact and undisturbed and provide you with the wood floor covering that you desire.
