Particle Board prep for Vinyl Self Stick Tiles

Help:

I keep hearing that you shouldn't put vinyl self-stick tile down on particle board.

Question: Does this apply to the really smooth type of particle board?

Question: If it is not that smooth, can you apply a coat of polyurethane, paint or something else to smooth it out and provide a better sticking surface?

thanks..

Unhappy Bending the rules

Particle board should not be used unless specifically stated by the manufacturer of the self stick tile.

Do not apply to particleboard (and the warranty does not cover this).

I don't have an answer for our, but I am doing the same project (vinyl over particle board). So I am also wondering what can be done to prep the surface before putting down vinyl?

Vinyl Self Stick tile on Particle board

If you want to put vinyl self stick tile on particle board, what you do to prep it is to put at least 2 coats of polyurethane on it.

I just did it and it works. Make sure it is totally dry before you do it and sanding might be necessary between coats if your board is rough.
