vapor barrier?

I've done alot of research prior to starting my flooring project. I tend to overprepare on such things.

I looked at about 6 different sets of instructions for installing vinyl. 5 of the 6 made no mention, whatsoever, of a vapor barrier but the 6th claimed that a vapor barrier is virtually essential!.

I'm a little bit confused now because 5 of my guides say no and one says YES!.

Is a vapor barrer under vinyl really that important? What kind of ills is it designed to prevent?

Under what circumstances should it be used?

I'm laying down on top of some gold flecked sheet vinyl from the 1960's and I don't see any defects in that stuff.

Perhaps the vapor barrier is more climate related and its just not used in Colorado or something.

I installed vinyl in Colorado for twenty years and never used a vapor barrier. If you're going over an existing vinyl, it would act as one anyhow. You don't have enough humidity or moisture issues to make anything like that necessary.
