I'm starting to remove vinyl flooring in a bath and find that it's pretty tough going. Are there any solvents or techniques(heat?) to speed the job? Also, could I install underlayment on top of the existing vinyl floor and then install a ceramic tile floor on that?

Cool

If it's on a concrete slab. You can pull the wear layer off and wet the felt. A very sharpe razor scraper and changing the blades works good.
Here in Texas, they put cheap discontinued vinyl down on the slabs where the C-tile is going and lay over it, to suppress cracked slabs transfering to the c-tile. It works!
If your talking about, over a wood subfloor, it most likely has underlayment. Pull the underlayment up with the vinyl.
