First-Time Vinyl Installation - Patching Compound Help!!

Hi,

We're attempting our first vinyl floor installation in a bathroom approximately 6'x6', and we've laid a plywood underlayment and nailed it down with ring-shank nails according to the underlayment manufacturer's specifications.

In order to fill the recesses and minor imperfections, we purchased Planipatch, but we had a hard time getting it to smooth out...there were areas that were higher (ridges of patch), so we sanded the entire surface. There were also still recessed areas, so we applied a second coat of patch. We fear that we may have put it on too thick even with the first coat, and the second coat may have made things worse.

We're looking for suggestions as to how best to proceed. Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Ted Cain

Welcome to the forums!

Take a wide stiff putty knife and scrap it across the surface, it will slowly shave a small layer off. Continue until you have the profile you desire. Not a quick process, but not the end of the world either. You have to have a perfectly smooth surface for the vinyl tile or you will see the defect through to the surface of the tile.

Give us more specifics on what tile you are using. Some may not be compatible with cement based patching compounds. What glue are you using?

We are going to use General Use Multi-Floor Adhesive by Tec Skill Set for the glue. The vinyl is a pre-cut vinyl flooring from Domco
