basement storage room flooring problem.
I have basement room with carpet over old tile. The tile is likely asbestos tile as my best guess. I want to simply remove the carpet, remove any loose tiles and place something directly over the tile.
I tested a 12x12 adhesive tile on top of the old tile and it doesn't stick. I need something that doesn't use adhesive. I do not want to spend money on leveling compound or any other extras .... this is for a room with no traffic and is only used as storage.
Any ideas?

Remove carpeting. If it's just for storage I would put 2 x 4 or bricks to put things on. That will give air flow through the bottom section and avoid mold and moisture. Use a dehumidifier during summer months.

Thing is if I simply remove carpet, the old 9x9 tile is in bad shape. There is adhesive and such on the surface from previous carpet/flooring. Some of the tiles have come loose as well exposing the glue on the underside which I assume is asbestos as well.

Bricks, blocks or pallets under your stored items so air can flow across the carpet would be my simplest suggestion.

im not worried about that asbestos... something else will get me before that. lol. Plus any exposed glue needs no curing time, its been curing for 60 years I bet!!!
Although this a storage room, I do need it to look decent. The tiles are not that.
I like the idea of laying down vinyl as sam floor mentioned but I fear glue will not stick to the tiles and if I leave the tiles. I still will have to level it out or something so I don't see imprints thru the vinyl.

Vinyl like IVC doesn't need to be glued. It is held down by trim around the edges.

Several companies make this type of vinyl
