Question

I have excellent but stained sheet vinyl over concrete on existing floor. Existing floor was well leveled and glued down. Surface of existing sheet vinyl is urethane-glossy with very slightly( shallow) embossed pattern of large squares. I wish to have vendor lay on top of current floor. They have estimated several hundred $$ for "embossing compund". Is it needed? Why?

Floor prep for vinyl over old vinyl installation

You might find the info at http://www.todayshomeowner.com/repai...1022_qa05.html to be helpful in understanding why the floor must be prepped. Make sure if you are purchasing a product with a warranty that this installation procedure will not void any manufacturer's warranties. Depending upon the installers and the area in which you live, the cost of floor prep and installation vary. Some installers charge so much per square foot for floor prep. Others charge a flat rate. Make sure your vinyl product has a mold/mildew warranty as this is important in installing over concrete.
