Sandpaper grit? - Vinyl Squares going over vinyl squares

Hello all - I am going to be putting vinyl squares over vinyl squares. I believe this will work. The existing floor is very solid mechanically, level and free of defects. I plan to off-set the new floor vs. the existing floor so that seams do not line up.

The existing floor has a bit of a texture (not extreme). So I plan to sand first to ensure a texture free surface. I'll be using a hand held orbital (not belt) sander. Its a small kitch floor, so the larger orbital sander ( ~ 5 x 9") seems to be the best equipment to use.

Does anyone has a suggestion on what grit of sandpaper I should use?

Any other ideas / pitfalls to avoid would be welcome.

Thanks.

What size are your old tiles? Are they 9" x 9" or 12" x 12"?

I know they say it can be done, but any flooring is dependent on a solid base, squares over squares is going to produce soft joints. If the room is small just take the extra effort to remove the original floor and do it right!
