Vinyl flooring.

Hi all.
First posting, so bit green behing the gills as they say. Upon removing tiles from the 2 walls for retiling, i discovered a 1/2" gap between wall and floor(vertically). Which means i can see into the room below. I assume this is normal (??). What do i do to close the gap to replaster and retile the wall? At a complete loss. Thanks for any answers in advance. I wouldn't say it's normal, no. But different construction methods were used in the past so it's not surprising. I'd probably just fill the gap with a little expanding foam if you can do it without making a mess. Only reason to do it is for sound... And so that debris doesn't fall down there during construction.
